A Virtual Day at the Seaside

A Virtual trip to the beach

I sounds bizarre does it not? It is something else I found on the fabnhsstuff website and it resonated with an idea I had some years ago.

My plan was to develop a programme, that I would take to residential nursing and dementia homes. I would derive the information from online resources dating back to the period when most residents would have been in their teens and twenties.

I would run hour long sessions on a weekly or twice monthly basis, for minimal cost per attendee. We would bring up a slide. Trigger a memory and create discussion that would encourage conversation, bring back memories of happy times and stimulate the group.

I never developed the idea further but it is there for someone to take on.

I was fascinated to see how this had been taken further by a group working with demented patients.

They recreated a virtual day at the beach. From getting on the bus in the morning, to arriving at the beach, hankies on heads. Sands castles, windbreaks, songs and even a donkey.

Fabnhsstuff.net is inspirational, at a time when the NHS is mired in dispute and austerity, and provides a vision of what is possible with our relentlessly enthusiastic young people. Now we just need an enthusiastic Department of Health and a new Secretary of State.
